OYEHUT — With snow in the forecast, wrestlers from across the Twin Harbors headed to the beach. None of the wrestlers returned with a tan, but seven athletes finished the day with individual titles.
Aberdeen’s Edgar Salazar (120), Dylan Landeglos (182) and Andres Cisneros (220), Willapa Harbor’s Joseph Lewis (132) and Jack Jordan (140), Montesano’s Jordan Tibbitt (113) and North Beach’s Seth Bridge (285) all ended the day as champions in their respective weight classes at North Beach’s Bash at the Beach wrestling tournament at the House of Pain on Saturday.
Klahowya finished with three individual champions and took home the team title with 178 total points. Willapa Harbor edged out Aberdeen for second place with 156 1/2 points to the Bobcat total of 150. Ocosta finished fourth with 141 points, followed by Hoquiam with 134 and Montesano with 121 1/2. The host Hyaks finished eighth out of the 12 teams with 60 points.
Willapa Harbor’s individual wins would come just moments apart. Lewis and Jordan wrestled on different mats, but both matches were won in dominant fashion. Lewis jumped out to an early lead with a quick takedown and two near fall points against Klahowya’s Karsten Jensen. Lewis started the second period on bottom and escaped to get a takedown and stay in command the rest of the way to a 14-7 decision.
Jordan was aggressive from the first whistle against Ocosta’s Sam Quinby. Earning near fall points in the first period, Jordan controlled the entirety of the match for a 10-0 victory.
“We are missing four varsity kids so we felt like we were coming in to be middle of the road, but some of the kids stepped up and did real well,” Willapa Harbor head coach Preston Crow said. “I think we did pretty well with missing a bunch of kids with sickness. We got some young kids in the finals so we overachieved for sure.”
Quinby was one of three Wildcats to come up on the losing end of finals with Kaleb Orton getting pinned by Klahowya’s Dallin Stafford in the third round and Matthew Hart coming up on the short end of a 14-2 decision against Orting’s Austin Spader.
“The day, overall, was pretty good,” Ocosta head coach Kevin Goodrich said. “Everybody in the tournament was able to place top-five and wrestled well through the group. The three finalists all wrestled tough against three good opponents. I felt good about our day and for a small school to take fourth was a nice showing.”
Aberdeen finished with three titles including Salazar who defeated teammate Angel Cisneros in the 120-pound final. Salazar jumped ahead with a takedown in the first period and led 2-1 going into the third period when he earned a reversal to pave the way to a 6-2 win.
The Bobcats’ two other titles came in much more one-sided matches. Andres Cisneros earned a first round pin against Willapa Harbor’s Ricky Robineat, while Dylan Landelos controlled his match against Montesano’s Tanner Rossmaier to the tune of 14-6.
“We are kind of in a rut right now and we probably should have done better,” Aberdeen head coach Jimmy Martin said. “We just hit a midseason rut right now, but we will get better. It was nice to see Salazar get back on top. With Salazar and Angel Cisneros the match was so close and it is nice to see that. I’m happy with the individuals that won titles, but we have a lot of work to do.”
Rossmaier, Andy Fry (106) and Kai Olson (170) all came out on the losing end of finals matches for the Bulldogs, but Montesano was not shut out as Tibbitt defeated Hoquiam’s Alex Houbregs. Tibbitt led 6-3 going into the third period. Houbregs earned a reversal to start the final period and cut the lead to one point. Houbregs allowed an escape with just under a minute to go to give himself a chance to tie the match up with a takedown, but Tibbitt fought off several shots from Houbregs to hold on for a 7-5 decision.
“We had a lot of young and inexperienced kids, but we were pretty excited with their showings today,” Montesano head coach Jeff Klinger said. “(Tibbitt) is a first year wrestler who is a senior and is just starting to put stuff together. He didn’t have much technique and he was kind of brawler, but he is starting to put it together. His strength is there, it is just picking up on the technique.”
Houbregs was the only Hoquiam wrestler to earn a spot in the finals, but the Grizzlies finished with three wrestlers at least tied for third.
“We didn’t get as many in the finals as we wanted, but every kid we had fought really hard,” Hoquiam assistant coach Jason Garman said. “Even the losses we had were hard-fought matches. It was a good tournament with high quality teams. We may have stumbled a bit in some of the brackets, but we still have some time before the postseason to correct some of those things.”
Garman cited Andres Vasquez, who finished tied for third at 138 pounds for his effort working through the consolation bracket.
North Beach had to wait for the final match of the night to see a Hyak champion, but Bridge did not disappoint with a 10-3 win over Aberdeen’s Skylar Murray. The first point of the match actually came when Bridge poked Murray in the eye, but Bridge overcame a 2-0 deficit by getting control of Murray’s legs late in the second and working to get near fall points at the end of the period. Bridge earned a reversal to start the third and rode out the final minute of the match.
“Overall, we had some good competition,” North Beach head coach Maynard Reed said. “(Seth) has been real consistent working on his moves and staying in control. Every week he gets better and he keeps himself in good position and he is starting to become more automatic in how he hits moves.”
