Sports Roundup: Track team shines in Chehalis

Softball, JV baseball results

The North Beach Hyaks track team travelled to Chehalis this past weekend, fairing well despite changing elements. The weather on Friday for the prelims and JV portion of meet, was sunny and dry with sunscreen being applied. On Saturday, rain jackets, tents and umbrellas where the norm.

Both the boys and girls teams scored 50 points, with the boys placing fourth and the girls placing sixth. Most of the schools competing were from the Evergreen 2a league, which made for tough competition for the 2B Hyaks.

On the Lady Hyaks side, Lorin Cox, Reilly Moore, Brooklynn Neal and Mariah Vogler in the 4 x 100 relay finished 53.31 and placed second overall. Their new season record ranks them fifth in state. Cox’s time of 27.70 in the 200m was also impressive as it ranked her in the top 10 for that event as well as Neal’s time of 17.27 in the short hurdles. Both are freshmen.

In the throwing events, the Fruh sisters, Nettie and Natasha, continued their dominance as both medaled in the shotput and the discus. Nettie’s throw of 112’10” is a season record for her.

On the boys side, the throwers’ domination was matched with a volley of team points from a variety of other field and running events. Most prominent was Rodney Washington in the high jump and the boys 4×100 relay team. Rodney secured a second-place finish as the relay team clocked a season best 46.35, which ranks them 10th in state. Tavo Muro continues his season quest in the open 400. His time of 55.47 is a personal record and etches him in the mix for the District 4 track meet. All three events were conducted in monsoon-like conditions.

In the throws, Hunter Dianovich launched a discus PR and placed 4th overall. Teammate Seth Bridge won the event with a 155’ throw. The two of them are joined by Ben Bridge in the rankings as all three are ranked in the top 7 at state. Seth also won the shotput with a heave of 51’2.75”. In the finals, he was joined by Ryan Louderback, who also had a season PR to place 5th.

This next week includes the lone home meet on the schedule as the Hyaks host a potpourri of schools Thursday. Friday, a select few will travel to Beaverton, OR to compete in the prestigious Jesuit Invitational. Saturday, the Hyaks will be traveling to Shelton for the Grandaddy Invite featuring some of the top athletes in the state.

BASEBALL

Hyaks 11, Grizzlies JV 10

OCEAN SHORES — North Beach rallied to put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh and defeat the Hoquiam junior varsity at North Bay Park on April 19.

The Hyaks (2-8) put two runners on with back-to-back walks to start their half of the seventh before Chance Beck drove in the tying run with a single. From there, North Beach benefited from some erratic pitching from the Grizzlies as the next three batters were all hit by pitches to plate the winning run.

“I’m really happy with the patience at the plate that my guys showed tonight,” North Beach head coach Dave Hinchen said. “They were selective, putting the ball in play. It was the best overall game that we have played all year.”
