LAKEWOOD — Capitalizing on second-half turnovers, North Beach downed Life Christian Academy, 36-18, in a non-leaguegame Saturday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

The Hyaks (1-1) never trailed, but were locked in a 12-12 deadlock in the third quarter before taking command.

A complete list of scoring plays was not provided. Marcus Pope scored North Beach’s first touchdown on a short run set upby a Steven Sotomish pass to Keenan Miller.

Patrick Day-Heyd recovered a fumble for North Beach’s final touchdown, with Pope jarring the ball loose.

“Winning those turnovers were a big factor in the game,” said first-year Hyak coach Travis Cluckey. “We worked really hardthis week and we got better on what we already know.”

Day-Heyd and Tavo Muro ran effectively for the Hyaks. Pope and linemen Dylan Sims, Anthony Almendarez, Ben Poplin andBrenden Chaney were cited for fine defense.

North Beach returns home Friday to face Toutle Lake in another non-leaguer.

Volleyball

Wildcats win in three

OYEHUT — Kaylee Barnum blasted nine aces and 14 kills as Ocosta beat North Beach, 25-9, 25-23, 25-14, in a non-league battle of Pacific League rivals on Tuesday at Oyehut.

Wildcat coach Barbara Rasmus cited Olivia Marsh for net play, Lillyan Barnum for back row defense and Serena Herman for reserve play.

Ocosta (2-0) used reserves extensively in the second set.

Mariah Vogler topped the Hyaks (0-2) with eight kills. First-year Hyak coach Sharayah Miller cited Ruby Pope for serving and Natasha Fruh for all-around play.

“They played better tonight than they did (last week) in South Bend,” Miller said.

The Wildcats also won the junior varsity and C squad contests.
