Rallying from a four-point deficit in the final minute in regulation, North Beach outlasted Toutle Lake 42-40 in overtime in the opening round of the District IV Class 2B tournament on Wednesday night at “The House of Pain.”
The Hyaks (13-8) will challenge second-ranked Wahkiakum in a quarterfinal Saturday at a time and location to be determined.
Down by as many as eight, the Hyaks still trailed 34-30 heading into the final minute. A Mariah Vogler basket cut the margin to two.
Regaining possession with about 10 seconds remaining, the Hyaks ran an inbounds play to perfection, with Hannah Avery shaking free for a tying layin (her only points of the game) with about five seconds left.
Adelina Desamours, scoreless during regulation, opened overtime with a 3-point basket. With Reilly Moore and Helen Garman combining for the remaining five points, North Beach led narrowly for the remainder of overtime.
“Our whole motto all year has been defense, defense,” North Beach coach Larry Moore said. “All the time (we were down), I felt if we played defense, we’d make some shots. These girls don’t give up, we’re like the little engine that could.”
Garman dominated the paint in leading the Hyaks with 18 points. The 5-foot-5 Avery yanked down 14 rebounds, while Vogler had 12 boards for the Hyaks.
Coach Moore cited his daughter Reilly for her ball-handling.
