OYEHUT — North Beach lived by the 3-pointer to outlast Hoquiam for a 46-41 overtime victory in a non-league girls basketball game at the House of Pain on Saturday.
The Hyaks (4-2) missed 22 treys on the night, but it was the six made shots from behind the arch, including two in overtime, that helped spur North Beach to victory.
Tied 39-39 at the end of regulation, neither team managed to score for the first three and a half minutes of the overtime period before senior Reilly Moore stepped into a 3-pointer to put the Hyaks up for good. Almost a minute later, Hyak junior Mariah Vogler drained a three from the corner with 38 seconds left on the clock to all but seal the win for North Beach.
“Both teams played great defense throughout the game and it was hard to score,” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “They got a lot of offensive rebounds, but we finally got a couple threes here and there. Reilly isn’t shy to shoot and she likes to shoot. She wasn’t afraid of the moment and the shot was there, she let it fly and it went in. Our girls really kept their composure. Mariah Vogler hadn’t hit a three the whole game, but she is open and she hit it and I’m really proud of her.”
Hoquiam (2-4) struggled with foul trouble the whole night, sitting seniors Izzy Hernandez and Brandi Parson each with two fouls in the first two minutes of the game. North Beach took advantage of the number of fouls committed by the Grizzlies and cashed in for 18 points from the free-throw line.
“Our main hurdle was the fouling,” Hoquiam assistant coach Denny Hinchen said. “I had two seniors sitting early so that hurt us. We have to work on our defense. The 3-pointers were huge in the fourth quarter. They put the nail in the coffin with those 3-pointers.”
The Grizzlies built a 7-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but North Beach clawed its way back in the contest with two shots from downtown spaced just two minutes apart. Reilly Moore cut the Hoquiam lead to three and then tied the game at 37-37 with just four minutes remaining.
Hoquiam, who had outscored the Hyaks 11 to 2 in the third quarter, went cold from the field making just one field goal over the quarter and overtime. The Grizzlies shot 1-for-19 over that 13-minute stretch as the Hyaks found their range.
A 3-pointer by the Hyaks brought North Beach to life in the first quarter. Hoquiam jumped out to a 10-2 lead, fueled by six points from Casey Mode, but a trey from Hannah Avery with around 2 minutes left in the first started what would be a 10 to 1 Hyak run to end the quarter tied 12-12.
North Beach shot 8-for-8 from the foul line and added a 3-pointer from Reilly Moore to take the lead 23-18 toward the end of the second quarter, but the Grizzlies fought back to go into halftime with the Hyaks leading 25-22.
The third quarter would be owned by the Grizzlies as North Beach missed seven shots from downtown during that 8-minute stretch. But the Hyaks heated up when it counted most.
Reilly Moore’s long-range shooting helped her lead the Hyaks with 16 points, while Avery added 12 points.
Mode led Hoquiam with 12 points, while Parson and Kylee Bagwell each added eight points.
Larry Moore also cited Lorin Cox for her defensive play.
Hoquiam hosts Centralia on Monday, while North Beach travels to Ilwaco on Tuesday.
