An Ocean Shores deer poaching incident in the 300 block of Otsego Lane SW has been referred to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife for further investigation. A police report said the incident was reported at about 2 p.m. on Dec. 7, and the deer “had obviously been shot by an arrow or bullet.”
Fish and Wildlife agent Brian Alexander confirmed the ongoing investigation. The investigating officer reported the deer appears to have been shot by “archery equipment” and was seen mobile but staggering in the area. A photo of the dead buck shows a hole in its chest.
A dark-colored SUV seen leaving the area may be involved, WDFW said. Any information should be provided to the WDFW Wildcomm Office at (360) 902-2936. Those who provide information leading to an arrest will be kept in confidence and may be eligible for a cash reward or bonus points for special permit hunting opportunities.
Alexander noted that there is an open deer season through December for bow hunting in the Copalis game management unit, which includes Ocean Shores. Although the city bans hunting of deer in city limits, Alexander said many hunters may not know of the added regulations.
Poaching a deer carries a maximum penalty of $5,000 and up to one year in jail, or both.
Hot tub death
An autopsy is being conducted to determine what caused the death of a 59-year-old Port Hadlock woman who was found deceased in a hot tub at what Ocean Shores Police said was a nightly rental in the 900 block of Mt. Olympus Avenue SE.
The woman was found in the hot tub of the residence at about 7:52 a.m., police said. Grays Harbor County Coroner Lane Youmans said the woman’s cause of death was pending toxicology test results.
