A fire in a couch pushed up against a propane fireplace was the cause of the emergency response Thursday morning March 16 at the Grey Gull at 651 Ocean Shores Blvd. NW.
Officers from the Ocean Shores Police Department were first on scene just after 7 a.m., and reported smoke coming from a second-floor unit. Police then evacuated the remaining guests.
“The fire alarm fortunately came in just at shift change so the Fire Department was able to respond with a Fire engine and a ladder truck,” said a new release from Lt. Corey Kuhl. “Upon arriving, Capt. Mike Thuirer found smoke conditions from a single room on the second floor. Crews made entry with a hose line to find very heavy smoke conditions. Fire crews used the thermal imaging camera to locate the heat source as the smoke was to the floor.”
One hotel guest was evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was a couch cushion placed against the propane fire place, Kuhl said.
“The occupants of the room appeared to have been gone at the time. The room sustained substantial heavy smoke damage. This was a positive outcome on this event, but it is also a reminder of the looming dangers and possible large events here within the city that could easily overwhelm our resources and manpower capabilities,” Kuhl said.
