The U.S. Coast Guard rescued five crab fishermen early Wednesday morning from a commercial fishing boat that ran aground near Point Grenville, about four miles south of Taholah. The fisherman were uninjured.

Coast Guard personnel from Sector Columbia River used an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to hover above the Qualaysquallum, a 58-foot, steel-hulled fishing vessel based in Westport. The helicopter crew sent down a rope with a metal basket attached to the end to pull people off the ship and safely into the aircraft.

The fishermen were transported to Quinault Indian Reservation emergency medical services and the Qualaysquallum was still in the surf Wednesday morning.

Less than 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel and about 8,000 pounds of crab were left aboard the ship. Incident management division personnel and representatives from the Washington Department of Ecology will oversee removal of pollutants from the vessel. The Coast Guard said there were no reports of pollutants coming from the ship.
