Basketball roundup: Girls weather storm in Menlo

NB boys lose at home, Taholah trounces Loggers

MENLO — North Beach weathered a strong first quarter from Willapa Valley to come back and defeat the Vikings 53-46 in a Pacific 2B League game at Tenoski Gym on Saturday.

The Vikings (1-10, 4-11) jumped out to a 4-point lead after the first quarter, but the Hyaks worked back to take a 1-point lead into halftime and edge ahead of Valley with clutch free throw shooting near the end of the game.

“We played one of the best first quarters we played all year, but North Beach is seasoned and well-coached and they didn’t flinch and kept fighting the whole game,” Willapa Valley coach Colby Rodgers said. “The real difference was free throw shooting.”

The Hyaks (7-3, 11-3) were led by 20 points from Reilly Moore and 12 points each from Mariah Vogler and Helen Garman.

Hannah Cook scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists for Valley, while Madison Huber finished with eight rebounds, five steals and six points. Katie Adkins scored 12 points for the Vikings.

North Beach hosts Raymond on Tuesday, while Valley travels to Ilwaco.

OYEHUT — Walker Oblad overcame the flu bug to score 19 points as Willapa Valley beat North Beach in a Pacific 2B League match-up Friday at North Beach’s “House of Pain.”

Matt Pearson added 16 points and Ryon Ashley 14 for the Vikings (5-5, 9-5).

Willapa Valley led 36-27 at the half, but winning coach Jay Pearson was less than pleased at that stage.

“The key — and we had a heart-to-heart talk at halftime — is we made a pledge to defense,” Coach Pearson said. “We gave up five (conventional) three-point plays (in the first half) because we didn’t block out. The second half, until we subbed in, they scored seven points.”

Tim Johnson paced North Beach with 16 points, while Rodney Washington tossed in 13 for the Hyaks (1-9, 2-12).

Ashley grabbed eight rebounds for Valley and was also cited for his defense on Johnson. Peter Hamilton and Leonel Ruelas also had eight rebounds each for the Vikings.

North Beach hosts Raymond on Tuesday. On Thursday, Willapa Valley entertains Ilwaco.

TAHOLAH — Host Taholah kept its pressure defense in the playbook and rotated through its bench early and often in this Coastal 1B League win over Wishkah on Friday.

Zach Cain led all scorers with 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Chitwhins (5-0, 10-1). Teammates Brett Orozco and Terrance Jones each had a double-double — 14 points and 11 rebounds for Orozco and 15 points and 11 rebounds for Jones.

“We tried to play good half-court offense and just a solid defense; that was our focus,” Taholah head coach Mike Rose said. “Wishkah is scrappy. They got a lot of rebounds and we didn’t get too many off the offensive boards.”

“We are young and we struggled,” Wishkah head coach Stefanie Baltzell said. “We are learning and (the boys) showed improvement, even if it didn’t show on the scoreboard.”

Duncan Palmgren led the Loggers (0-5, 0-10), who started three eighth-graders, one freshman and one sophomore, with seven points and 12 rebounds. Eighth grader Cayden Stankavich got his first start and scored six points.

On Tuesday, Taholah hosts Naselle and Wishkah travels to Oakville.
