The North Beach High School Lady Hyaks were 2-5 going into a girls/boys doubleheader that had the Hyaks hosting Hoquiam from Evergreen 1A on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. North Beach won their season opener in November at Life Christian Academy and notched their second win at Northwest Christian.
To start the New Year, the girls have five games, the first four at home, over nine days. That represents a softer part of their schedule, with none of the four visiting teams bearing a winning record.
Those games bring in Chief Leschi at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3; Life Christian at 5:45 p.m. Friday January 4 (part of a girls/boys doubleheader); South Bend at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8; and Pe Ell at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10. The next night it’s back into the fire at Pacific 2B league power Willapa Valley.
In their last game, the Lady Hyaks were overpowered by Taholah,
63-19. After a 15-day layoff, the Taholah Chitwhins shook off some early rust to run away with a win over North Beach at Taholah High School.
“We came out kind of rusty at first … We missed a lot of close shots,” Taholah head coach Fred Pope said.
Despite the rust, Taholah led 15-5 after the first quarter.
The Chitwhins (4-2) found a groove in the second half, outscoring the Hyaks 35-10 over the final two quarters.
“In the second half our team turned up the heat on defense, got some steals, and turned those steals into points,” Pope said. “This was an overall team effort where the bench was just as important as the starters. Our bench provided great defense and allowed our starters to get a quick breather and back into the game.”
Taholah was led by Denise Curley Bear, who scored 21 points to lead the Chitwhins.
Nettie Mail added 18 points and eight rebounds for Taholah.
Lorin Cox led North Beach with 10 points on the evening. No other Hyaks player scored more than two points in the contest.

Hyaks Boys Basketball
Going into the Hoquiam game, the Hyaks boys were 3-6 with an early season win over South Bend, when Regan Harnagy poured in 31 points including 9 three-pointers. They also defeated Pe Ell and Taholah, the latter when Chance Beck hit a last second shot to claim a 45-44 win.
After the Hoquiam game, they Hyak boys play four times in 11 days: at Chief Leschi Wednesday, Jan. 2; hosting third place Life Christian at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4 (part of the girls/boys doubleheader); at South Bend Thursday, Jan. 10; and welcoming league leading Willapa Valley to the North Beach “House of Pain” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
