New Grays Harbor Community Concert band makes its debut

First performance Sunday at Bishop Center at Grays Harbor College

By SCOTT D. JOHNSTON

Ocean Shores resident Simon Rogers will come blow his horn at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 14, when the new Grays Harbor Community Concert Band makes its debut at the Bishop Center on the campus of Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen.

Although the 37-member band was organized early last fall at GHC, membership is not restricted to students. The band has members from age 12 to mid-70s, who hail from Raymond to Ocean Shores to the upper Wishkah to Tenino.

Rogers is a 28-year-old who works at Quinault Beach Resort and Casino, and played trumpet in the Shelton High School jazz, concert and marching bands from 2002-2007. After setting his horn aside for a few years, he started playing again about a year ago.

He said, “It’s nice to perform again,” and he is enjoying the “team effort” found with a group of musicians, like this new community band, “performing together to create one musical sound.”

Tickets to the first ever Grays Harbor Community Concert Band performance are $10, available online at www.ghc.edu/bishop and at the door.
